Concealed Hinge Template

Printable concealed hinge template for 35 mm cup hinges

Choose your hinge, type your doors, and print true-size templates for the cup, its screw holes and the mounting plates.

Your hinge

For frameless (European) cabinets. Face frame cabinets need face frame plates: use only the door templates here.

The maker's name is usually on the hinge arm. On an old door, the gap from its edge to the cup is the boring distance.

    Using the templates

    1. Print at 100% (Actual size) and check the square on each page measures 1 in or 25 mm.
    2. Cut each template on its heavy lines and tape it on with them along the edges named. Door templates go on the back of the door, cabinet templates on the inside of the side.
    3. Press an awl into each crosshair, then bore the cup with a 35 mm Forstner bit to the printed depth.
    4. For a middle hinge, mark the distance from the job list on the edge and set the template's line on the mark.

    Questions

What is the boring distance on a concealed hinge?

The distance from the door edge to the edge of the 35 mm cup: 3 to 7 mm for Blum CLIP top, Grass Tiomos and Hettich Sensys, 3 to 6 mm for Salice Silentia+. The cup center is that plus 17.5 mm.

How do I work out the overlay?

Overlay is how far the door covers the cabinet side: fixed distance + boring distance - plate height. A Blum CLIP top full overlay hinge (fixed distance 11 mm) bored at 5 mm on a 0 mm plate gives 16 mm. A negative answer is an inset door's reveal.

How far from the top and bottom should hinges go?

Hettich gives 60 to 100 mm to the hinge center, with hinges at least 280 mm apart. Blum, Salice and Grass say the top and bottom hinges must be farther apart than the door is wide. This page starts at 3 in, or 80 mm in metric.

How many hinges does a cabinet door need?

Each maker has a chart by height and weight. Salice gives 2 hinges up to 1000 mm (39-3/8 in) and 20 lb, 3 up to 1500 mm and 40 lb, 4 up to 2000 mm and 60 lb, 5 up to 2400 mm and 80 lb.

How deep is the 35 mm cup hole?

13 mm for Blum CLIP top, 13.5 mm for Salice Silentia+, 12.8 mm for Hettich Sensys and at least 12.6 mm for Grass Tiomos. Set the drill stop on scrap first.

Where do the mounting plate holes go?

On the inside of the cabinet side, two holes 32 mm apart on a line 37 mm from the front edge, centered on the hinge, for overlay doors on frameless cabinets. For an inset door the line moves back: door thickness + 38.5 mm for Blum and Grass, + 38 mm for Hettich. Face frames are not covered.
